San Josè – Playa de los Genoveses.

<italiano>

It is one of the best known beaches on the Almeria coast, in my opinion the most beautiful of all.

It is located in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. It can be reached from San José along a dirt road of about 3 kilometres, within uncontaminated nature devoid of the presence of man, with the exception of an ancient mill (Molino del Collado) and some old rural buildings.

Continuing for a couple of kilometers you reach Monsul beach, another jewel of the coast.

This whole area is full of locations (see link below) where many movies have been shot: at the Molino del Collado Una Pistola per Ringo; the Cortijo de los Genoveses is the Alamogordo prison in Per qualche Dollaro in più; along a dirt road a little further inland is the Romeral complex and the Cortijo de Monsul, that hosted several other films; scenes from Indiana Jones e l’ultima Crociata were filmed on Monsul beach.

Generally the sea and beaches are not very present in western films. But the Playa de los Genoveses is one of the main locations of La Texana and i Fratelli Penitenza (also known as Hannie Caulder), a 1971 film directed by Burt Kennedy. For this film, a set was also built on the beach, of which no trace can be found anymore.

First of all a gem: in a short sequence of the film Paco de Lucia, one of the greatest guitarists in history, appears playing alone on the beach:

Here are some images from the movie:
